WELCOME TO MY STUDIO
Chloe: Artist - Mum - Wanderer
When I first planned a solo painting trip, things were very different. The world was different. We’d never heard of covid. ChatGPT was still a baby learning to speak. I had my destination, my itinerary, my dream all planned out. Then covid happened and cancelled the world’s plans. Then, I had my son.
2021 and I almost gave up painting altogether. Ideas weren't forming, canvases weren't getting finished. Dried paint palettes were gathering dust, and I felt like my identity as an artist was ready for the bin too.
On a whim, I planned my solo painting trip that I'd neglected even after covid and early motherhood were no longer valid excuses. Then, life took the carpet from clean under my feet, just two days before I was due to fly. A health crisis, and a decision.
I decided to go on my trip anyway.
My Painting Journey
Exploring the British landscape
Nearly four years after I planned it, I finally set off on my solo trip. A different location, a different perspective and a whole lot more to miss at home. But it taught me so much.
Painting Beautiful Places is a passion project that was born in Scotland, but it was hiding in plain sight far earlier, when I first took my watercolours abroad to Patagonia on my honeymoon.
This was where I first discovered the incredible stories the landscape has to tell. The mountains, the greenery, the wide open spaces. I’d never been a landscape artist: the landscape was usually the background to a nature painting. But the more I wandered in nature without specifically looking for its wildlife, the more I was absorbed. I found beauty in these quiet, open, seemingly empty spaces that I hadn’t found before. The landscapes I painted no longer needed the wildlife, as they took on a life of their own.
Monet taught me the dynamics of light, and how the subtlest shift of hues can transform the landscape from quiet contemplation to brooding, moody, icy. Caspar David Freidrich taught me to love the vast openness of the lonely landscape. And taught me how to use the elements to craft a deeper meaning. Then there’s Landseer, Kyffin Williams and Turner - the great British artists that cemented my love of my home country, inspiring me to pursue my travels closer to home.
Rugged, legendary Scotland was the perfect place to start.
Further Back In Time
I've been painting for the last 15 years, primarily working in acrylics and oils, but I also love working with soft pastels, charcoals and watercolours. I travel with my sketchbooks, looking for inspiration in nature as often as I can. I'm primarily self-taught, and hugely influenced by natural science and the works of the Hudson River School artists and Impressionists. My favourite artists are Franz Marc and Claude Monet, and I love listening to classical and instrumental music when I paint. I have a little boy called Alfie who loves to paint and collage alongside me.
Born in the UK in 1991, I've lived on the Mediterranean island of Malta for over 20 years. Surrounded by the sea, the sun and just enough trees to keep me going.
I have participated in several collective and solo art exhibitions and juried shows over the years, and have original works sold to collectors in the UK, USA, South Africa and Malta.

Life has many meanings. It is biology, it is the sacred force that defines our Earth, it is process, it is culture, it is interaction, it is wit, and it is ambition. It may be a personal question, or it can be a matter of abstract debate. The challenge to the artist is to express one of these aspects of life in a visually striking manner, or even to combine several aspects in one work. "Traces of Life" Juried Art Show - Illinois, USA.
